| Playa Blanca | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Situated on the south coast of the island of Lanzarote, and around 35 kilometres south-west of Arrecife Airport, Playa Blanca is considered to be the most developing resort in the Canary Islands.
Once little more than a small fishing village, the past 20 years has seen the village expand into a vibrant and modern resort boasting a good selection of shops and supermarkets that cater for the everyday holiday essentials, with most also stocking a wide selection of recognisable branded goods.
Along the main tourist thoroughfares you will find an array of restaurants serving very good quality food, souvenir shops and cheap electronics vendors.
In addition to the resort centre, the fantastic Marina Rubicon is located a short distance outside of the town. The commercial centre that has grown around the Marina also boasts a number of bars and good quality restaurants and provides a great location for a romantic evening meal. With it's fantastic year-round weather and family atmosphere, Playa Blanca is very popular with visitors from the U.K. and Ireland.
The area features a number of beaches of varying size, however most visitors to Playa Blanca sadly never explore beyond the main beaches in the resort centre. The beach after which the town was named, Playa Blanca, is quaint and has been awarded a Blue Flag for its facilities, cleanliness, and water quality. Playa Flamingo is a few minutes walk away to the west, on the opposite side of the port and can be reached by the wide traffic free promenade that stretches all of the way from the Marina Rubicon. This beach itself is very attractive, with fine golden white sands, and is very popular with families. Playa Dorada is even smaller than Playa Blanca, and again its fine white sands have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag. Playa Dorada tends to be more popular with local residents however the beach shelves quite steeply only a few metres offshore so be aware of this should you enter the water. The award winning Papagayo Beaches are located around the Papagayo headland at the extreme eastern end of the bay in which the resort of Playa Blanca is located, some 4½ miles from the centre of the resort. Papagayo is now a specially protected area, and future building and development works along this part of the coast is now totally prohibited. The half dozen or so beaches that make up Papagayo are widely considered by many to be some of the best beaches in the whole of Spain, however getting there from Playa Blanca can be quite difficult as the road is quite rough and bumpy and additionally the government has imposed a toll on all vehicles travelling through Papagayo, however the trip is entirely worth it and, once on the beach we're sure you'll agree, just take a look at some of the photos at the top of the page. As a more practical alternative to the bumpy road, a "sea taxi" operates from the harbour at Playa Blanca throughout the day, taking around 1/2 an hour to make the short journey.
